Art Exhibition held at Cleary Park
THREE northern areas artists, Antonio Leeuskieter, Malverie Stanley and Wellington Phepheng held an exhibition at the Cleary Park Shopping Centre.
At the opening, Northern Areas People Development Initiative (Napdi) trustee and respected arts activist Michael Barry delivered a short address, heaping praise on the three artists’ talent.
“In a time when this community is so viciously stereotyped as violent and gang-ridden, it is essential that the correct story of the northern areas is told, he said.
Napdi would continue to work with individuals and other organisations to ensure that the northern areas were rid of perpetual stereotypes, he said.
Leeuskieter thanked the initiative for reviving the artists’ dream of establishing the Cultural Freedom Gallery. “We know this is only the beginning but we are ready to do what is necessary to
ensure the untapped talent of so many budding artists of this area is fully realised,” Leeuskieter said.
The artists will conduct workshops for the duration of the exhibition. Local artists Bevan Boggenpoel, Taryn Isaacs De Vega and Vincent Oliphant will also share some of their work.
