Ihron Rensburg |
Prof Ihron Rensburg completed his undergraduate studies in 1981 and graduated from Rhodes University (South Africa) with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. He completed his Master of Arts (Sociology) in 1994, and Ph.D. (International Development Education, Dissertation with Distinction) in 1996, both from Stanford University (USA). In 2017, he was honoured by the University of the West Indies with the award of the Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa.
Born and raised in Port Elizabeth, Rensburg completed his schooling at Patterson High School, where he was deputy head boy, in his matric year. Ihron’s father was a factory worker in a shoe factory. Prof Rensburg has held the position of Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg since 2006, prior to which he was Chief Executive Strategic Corporate Services at the South African Broadcasting Corporation, Deputy Director General of South Africa’s Department of Education, and General Secretary of South Africa’s (anti-apartheid) National Education Crisis Committee. Prof Rensburg is South Africa UNESCO National Commission Chairperson, Co-Chairperson (alongside the Deputy Minister of Basic Education) of Education Dialogue SA and Chairperson of the READ Foundation. He was a Commissioner of South Africa’s first National Planning Commission, where he chaired the working group on Social Protection and Human Capabilities. Having successfully pioneered the University of Johannesburg through its first stages of accessible global excellence and stature, Prof Rensburg is a regular key note speaker at prestigious national and global conferences where he is an avid contributor to internationalization; excellence, human dignity and social inclusion; and, sustainable development with particular reference to the evolving role of Global Africa. He has won many awards, including the President’s Medal (University of Southern Carolina), the Le Matinal Africa India Education Leadership Award, Metropolitan Eastern Cape Education Leadership Award, WK Kellogg Foundation Global Fellowship, Ford Foundation Research Grant, HSRC Social Movement Research Grant, Merck, Sharpe & Dohme Fellowship and the Rhodes University Bursary. |
