
Professor Derrick Swartz currently served as Vice-Chancellor of Nelson Mandela University from 2008 to 2017. He was Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Fort Hare University (1999-2007), where he is credited with leading a successful turnaround strategy. In 2005, under his leadership, the University was awarded the Supreme Order of Boabab (Gold Class) by the State President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki. Prof Swartz started his academic journey at the University of the Western Cape where he obtained a BA degree (1979- 1981), an MA and PhD degrees in sociology of development and in 2008 received an Honorary doctorate in Human Rights Law from Essex University. |
