Alviro was born on 25th November 1980 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Petersen was born and raised in Gelvandale, Port Elizabeth and attended St Thomas High School. His father was a taxi driver. Alviro started his first class cricket career aged 21 at Northern Titans, where he went onto play for six years.
Alviro then moved to the Highveld Lions and was named captain of the side in 2010. Under his leadership, the Lions have flourished, playing in five domestic finals including the final of the Champions League in 2012. They have also achieved three Champions League places in the last four years.
Alviro made his ODI debut for South Africa in 2006 in East London and then his Test debut in 2010 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. He became the third South African to score a hundred on test debut.
Alviro made his T20 International debut for South Africa in 2010 at the Sir Vivian Richards Ground, Antigua.
